Thermo-reversibility is a unique quality of certain ClearH2O® gels. When heated, the semisolid gels transform into a semi-liquid, and when cooled to room temperature, they revert back to their original gel state. Our thermo-reversible gels include HydroGel, LabGelTM Primate and LabGelTM Primate (Sugar-Free).
Heating Instructions
The recommended method is to place the unopened pouch in hot water until the gel reaches its melting temperature and becomes fluid. Melting temperatures of different gels will vary from 130ºF to 160ºF. If using a microwave, put the pouch in a container of water to allow for more uniform heating. Caution should be used when handling the gels after they have been heated. We recommend protective gloves to guard against burns.
Using the Gel to Administer Oral Medications
LabGelTM products are designed for dispensing oral medications, especially bitter-tasting ones. The gel should be heated to the minimum temperature needed to become fluid. Then add the pre-measured dose of medication and stir well. To minimize the duration of time the drug is exposed to elevated temperatures, use a container with a large surface base to facilitate heat transfer. Refrigeration can be used to shorten the time it takes for the gel to return to its semisolid state.
