Use of HydroGel in Shipment of Rodents and Guinea Pigs

HydroGel provides animals a supply of water during shipping that is clean, safe and non-wetting. There are several ways to present HydroGel to the animal.

Option 1

The most commonly used technique is to cut two slices 2 to 3 inches long on the side of the pouch in the shape of an X. This allows the animal access to the gel.

Option 2

Removing both ends of the pouch before it is placed in the shipping container to allow access and at the same time protects the uneaten gel.

Option 3

The entire contents of the pouch can be squeezed directly onto the bedding. Because of its unique non-wetting qualities, HydroGel cannot readily be absorbed into the bedding.

Option 4

To keep HydroGel off the cage bottom, cut the pouch as directed in Option 1 and fasten the pouch to the side of the shipping container with staples or tape.

ClearH2O® supplies a Pouch Mate tool specifically designed to easily open the pouches. It can also be used to assist in removal of the gel from the pouch as suggested in Option 3.
