FAQs

  • When should I use DietGels®?

DietGel® products are a new soft diet formulation with  a full complement of carbohydrate, fat and protein, . It is fortified with a both AIN mineral and vitamin mix (with the exception of DietGel Recovery, which only contains mineral mix). They are a superior alternative to mash diets, that DietGel 76A can be used as the sole source of nutrition and hydration for long periods of time, reducing time and labor costs.

Because the formula does not contain vitamins and has lower levels of protein than standard diets, it is not recommended as a sole source of nutrition for long periods of time. For a sole source of nutrition use DietGel76A. However, customers have used the product as a sole source of nutrition for up to 3 months with no issues. Please consult with your nutritionist for long term use.

DietGels products Recovery are  is a nutrient fortified hydration gel designed to provide compromised rodents a palatable source of hydration and energy and are is an excellent solution for supplemental hydration for:

    • Breeding and weaning of pups
    • Post-surgical support
    • Neurologically compromised rodents
    • EAE models, Transgenic Mice

  • What is the best way to store DietGel products?

Unopened DietGel can be stored at room temperature and does not require special handling. Shelf life for unopened DietGel is 18 months.

Once opened (provided the gel has not been contaminated) ClearH2O products can be stored either at room temperature or at 4°C in a sealed bag/container to prevent the product from drying out for approximately 2 weeks

  • Why does DietGel sometimes have white or brown specs?

Non-soluble ingredients are sometimes visible in DietGel, showing up as white to brown specs or clumps. The non-soluble ingredients do not affect the nutritional integrity of the product, making it 100% safe to use for your research animal.

  • Why does the color of DietGel vary from case to case?

Color variation occurs during our sterilization process. When DietGel products are produced the color is a milky white. The product is then sterilized. The irradiation process changes the product color from a milky white to a caramel color. Product position within the sterilization chamber results in color variation. All of the product is 100% sterile and safe to use.

  2. This diet gel has helped with pup sizes and with poor lactating females. It is easy and convenient it give to the mice and rats. They seem to love it as well! I recommend giving this prenatal diet gel a try if you are struggling with your breeders.

  4. The facility I work at has had some success using the prenatal diet gel for our breeding colonies. We have a particular strain of mouse that is extremely difficult to breed. Unfortunately the gel hasn’t solved all of our breeding issues, but offering it to them allows us to be confident that the breeders are getting the nutrients that they need. The gel is very palatable; so far none of our mice have refused it.

We have had more success in using the prenatal lab gel for post op rats that have decreased appetites.

  5. At the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Center, we wanted to find an easy-to-use dietary supplement that could help mouse strains with breeding difficulties. My technicians performed a project where they compared the frequency of litters, litter size, and weaning body weight when various mouse strains were given DietGel Prenatal in comparison to our regular rodent diet. We observed a significant increase in litter size in one strain, and an increased trend in frequency of litters for all other strains when they were receiving the DietGel Prenatal. Since then, we have started recommending to our Researchers prenatal gel diet for strains with breeding difficulties.

  7. We offer DietGel Prenatal to our breeding female mice in our mouse colonies’. We never have had any issues with the mice eating it as it is very appetizing. It is easy to distribute as much or as little as you would like the mice to have. We use a tongue depressor to divide a cup into specific sizes of slices and fill their dishes every 2-3 days as any uneaten gel dries up.

  9. Prenatal diet is AMAZING!
I tested it on a few difficult strains that have a hard time breeding. I definitely saw an improvement on health of mother and pups.
I even used it as a preventative for dystocia . I noticed a line with this as a health issue at a higher rate than normal mice. This is based on observation only but I did notice I have better success with the pups being delivered. Low to no incidences of dystocia.

  10. Overall pretty good. We mainly do Patient Derived Tumor Xenograft Drug Treatment studies. Most of the athymic nude mice like this dietgel. However, they do still get picky sometimes so you have to switch up the supplements (Dietgel boost, nutrical, or kitten milk).

  11. Prenatal DietGel has helped my breeder colony to get much bigger and healthier pups, especially when you give it to the mother right after a litter has dropped. My lab also uses it to help our breeders be more productive when we have a slow point, and it helps us get much bigger pups by the time they are ready to be weaned
